Cyclist killed in Brooklyn

CBS 2 - New York News: Lawyer Killed In Freak Bicycle Accident:

A woman bicyclist was killed in Brooklyn when she tried to squeeze between an ice cream truck and an electronics delivery truck, that just opened its door.

Two things are particularly troubling. One is the article, which describes this as a "freak accident." In fact it's not. The driver didn't look when he opened his door. A freak accident is one that's so random and so strange that it can't reasonably be avoided. This leads to the other disturbing element: the driver was not cited. You door a cyclist and you get away clean.

Not only was the driver not cited, he wouldn't even have been aware had someone not run after him for two blocks to tell him. But, sure enough, the cops will be out in force again in two weeks time arresting cyclists that are peacefully taking part in a critical mass ride.
